Grandma Rudeen's Spicy Molasses Cookies

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup shortening
  • 1 cup brown sugar packed
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/4 cup molasses
  • 2 1/4 cups flour
  • 2 teaspoons soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspooncloves
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ginger

Instructions

  • Mix shortening, brown sugar, eggs and molasses. Add sifted flour, soda, salt, cloves, cinnamon and ginger. Chill. Form into balls. Roll in granulated sugar. Bake at 375 degrees for 10-12 minutes.

Notes

These are Alyssa's most requested cookie. I remember watcing Grandma make these (and her sugar cookies) and she was always so calm and gentle, even when she cooked.
For chewy cookies use shortening (Crisco). For a crispier cookie, use butter or maybe half Crisco and half butter.
