- Boil until it crackles when dropped in cold water (almost 300 degrees). Hard crack. Do not stir. Add flavoring and coloring and blend by turning around in the pan. Anise for red. Wintergreen for green. Best if you make only 1/2 recipe at a time. Pour in small buttered container (about 6×8). As it cools, cut with scissors into small pillows.
